The Nandi Bari lineage has always been deeply devoted to both Lord Shiva and Shakti. This spiritual inclination led them to establish a Shiva temple and construct a grand Chandi Mandap supported by eight विशाल pillars. Around 1610, Durga Puja began among zamindar families in Kolkata—not only as an act of devotion to the Mother Goddess but also as a reflection of prosperity and cultural pride. In a similar way, Durga Puja began at Nandi Bari in Medinipur, carried forward by the zamindars under the divine will of the Goddess.
Though the grandeur of earlier times may have faded, the sincerity and devotion in worship remain unchanged.
The preparations begin on the sacred day of **Janmashtami**, when the ritual framework (kathamo puja) is performed. On **Mahalaya**, the idol of the Goddess is painted. Gradually, with temple decoration, cleaning, and arrangements, the auspicious day of **Maha Shashthi** arrives.

## **Maha Shashthi**
On Maha Shashthi, the Goddess is invoked beneath the Bel tree in the form of Chandi and begins to receive worship. A sacred Kalash is also स्थापित at the temple of the family deity, Shri Radha Madhab.
On the following day, **Saptami**, the Goddess is adorned as Jagat Janani Rajrajeshwari. The sacred ritual of bathing the **Kola Bou** is performed in the waters of the Kansabati River and then brought home. Rituals like **Chokkhu Daan (eye-giving ceremony)**, **Vastra Daan**, and **Naivedya offerings** are performed with deep devotion. Evening Aarti is conducted daily with great श्रद्धा.

## **Maha Ashtami**
On Maha Ashtami, numerous devotees gather at Nandi Bari, offering flowers and Bel leaves at the feet of the Goddess while chanting mantras, praying for the fulfillment of their wishes. The Mother listens compassionately to every prayer.
Then arrives the most awaited moment of the year—the sacred **Sandhi Kshan**. During this divine juncture, the Goddess manifests in her fierce forms—Mahishasura Mardini, Mahapralay Karini, and Chamunda. Time seems to stand still as devotees gaze upon her दिव्य face. Words fall short in describing this अनुभव—it is beyond language, beyond expression.
In that moment, Goddess Durga transforms into Kali and Chamunda, embodying intense शक्ति to destroy evil and grant liberation (moksha). The priest, overwhelmed with devotion, chants:
**“Om Karalavadanam Ghoram Muktakeshim Chaturbhujam, Kalikam Dakshinam Divyam Mundamala Vibhushitam.”**
The clay idol becomes a living embodiment of divine energy. Amid thick incense smoke, the face of the Goddess appears radiant and alive. Whether through trembling of the idol, falling of Bel leaves, or tears of devotion in the eyes of devotees—she makes her presence felt.
This is the mystical union of the human soul with the supreme Mahamaya—a moment beyond illusion, beyond ego.

## **Maha Navami**
On Maha Navami, the Goddess is worshipped in the form of a young girl through **Kumari Puja**. A young girl, adorned as the Goddess, blesses everyone with her innocent hands, symbolizing purity and divine शक्ति.
---
## **Dashami**
Dashami marks the grand conclusion. The idol at Nandi Bari is one of the largest and heaviest traditional structures in Medinipur, worshipped continuously for 420 years.
Earlier, around 35 bearers would carry the idol on their shoulders for immersion. Today, due to its immense weight, it is taken on an iron वाहन to Gandhi Ghat for visarjan.
As the Goddess departs, tears fill the eyes of devotees. Her face becomes blurred through tears, and a voice from within cries out—
**“Ma, please stay a few more days…”**
And truly, it feels as though the Mother also shares this sorrow.
To the devotees, she is not merely a clay idol—she is the living Jagat Janani, the cosmic mother, the divine protector. During **Sindoor Khela**, when married women offer vermilion to the Goddess, many witness tears in her eyes—an emotional moment beyond words.
This bond between the Mother and her devotees is deeply personal—felt in silence, expressed through tears, and beyond the limits of language.
